UFO fleet sails over Raven Street Church in New Orleans

On Saturday, November 12, 2011, a spectacular UFO fleet was observed moving slowly across the sky above Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana late at night.

One person who witnessed the event was able to record the UFO fleet as it passed overhead. The video was posted online by a 45-year-old musician, theologian, and paranormal enthusiast named Tim on MegaCOOK28's Channel. It is unclear whether Tim is also the videographer.

Over the course of four and a half minutes, more than three dozen glowing orange orbs were seen over Raven Street Church. The area just beneath the moving UFOs was filled with noisy crowds of people on Bourbon Street. Some of those present simply went about their business while others stared up into the sky at the unidentified flying objects gliding high above them.

The UFO footage on the left side of this page shows that the objects were all heading in the same direction. They appeared to be the same size and glowed with the same internal orange light. Although the objects have not been identified, they do resemble Chinese lanterns being guided by a light breeze.

Google maps satellite images show titanic structures of unknown purpose in China. Theories as to what the grid-like sites may be vary greatly from imaging artifacts to top-secret military bases.

The weird-looking structures appeared at the service after Google updated its satellite images for the Gobi Desert in China.

The objects vary in their shape, but all are really creepy. There are networks of oddly-meshed lines that look like giant metallic strips, an array of evenly-spaced objects with what looks like vehicles around them, a 30-kilometer long grid of thousands of thin lines and a radial structure with something like aircraft in the central part.

Other objects found by map users are more recognizable. A site resembling an airfield is quite unsuspicious, except for its strange bluish color.

What use the facilities have is open for all kinds of speculation. One version discussed online says the megastructures may have a job in China’s space program serving is giant calibration tables for spy satellites. Another says Beijing is trying to get in touch with whoever might notice their message in outer space. Yet another says they are training ranges for the Chinese army, imitating key targets of their potential enemies.

Which one is true, if any, may take a long time to find out, unless Google comes out with a statement like “Oops, we forgot to wipe the camera lens clean.”

No official comment on the incident was immediately available.

Fisherman in Cordoba, Argentina caught a three eyed wolf fish in a lake called Hot Water Jet, which is located near a nuclear power plant. Coincidence?

You've heard of life imitating art, but now a fish found in Argentina resembles something you'd see on "The Simpsons" -- and it's not making environmentalists laugh.

Back in 1990, the long-running series did an episode that featured "Blinky," a three-eyed fish that cropped up near the Springfield nuclear power plant, where Homer worked.

Now, 21 years later, fishermen in Córdoba, Argentina caught a three-eyed wolf fish in a reservoir near a local nuclear power plant, according to Gizmodo.com.

One of the fisherman, Julian Zmutt, said no one noticed the third eye at first because it was dark.

“We were fishing and we got the surprise of getting this rare specimen," reported The Blaze.com. "As it was dark at that time we did not notice, but then you looked at him with a flashlight and saw that he had a third eye.”

The fish bares no resemblance to Blinky, but it is still causing quite a stir.

According to Infobae.com, a Spanish-language news site, the lake where the three-eyed fish was caught is a reservoir where hot water from the nuclear facility is pumped. more

Traces of Mystery Radiation Detected Across Europe

Trace amounts of the radioactive material iodine-131 have been detected across Europe over the past two weeks, according to nuclear officials there. The source of this radiation-spewing material is unknown.

Iodine-131 is a by-product of the type of nuclear fission reactions that occur in reactors and nuclear weapons; it emits radiation that can cause cancer when absorbed in high enough doses. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the levels of iodine-131 that have been detected in several locations across Europe are abnormally high, but not high enough to pose a public health risk, Reuters reported today (Nov. 11).

Austria's Environment Ministry said the small levels of radioactive iodine it detected would expose the population to a radiation dose equal to just one-40,000th of the dose received in a transatlantic flight.

Nonetheless, the IAEA is on the hunt for the source of this free-flying nuclear fission product, which the agency does not believe to be a remnant of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, earlier this year. Iodine-131 decays quickly, with a half-life of just eight days.

The uptick in radioactive iodine was first detected in late October by the Czech Republic's Office of Nuclear Safety, and has since been measured elsewhere, the IAEA said.

Paddy Regan, a professor of nuclear physics at Britain's University of Surrey, told Reuters that the iodine may have leaked from a radiopharmaceuticals manufacturing plant. Alternatively, it may be leaking from a hospital, he said, as these often keep supplies of iodine in store.

Massimo Sepielli, head of the nuclear fission unit at Italy's national alternative energy body ENEA, suggested several other possibilities: "It could be coming from the transporting of [nuclear] material, it could come from a hospital ... it could even come from a nuclear submarine, even if it's a more complicated possibility ... but you can't rule that out."

Mysterious 'Unicorns of the Sea' Tracked by Scientists for First Time

The frigid waters of the Arctic are home to near-mythical creatures, sometimes called the "unicorns of the sea" for the long, ivory tusk that spirals several feet out of the top of their heads.

Worldwide there are only about 50,000 to 80,000 narwhals, as they are more commonly known, with about two-thirds of these whales summering in the fjords and inlets of Nunavut in northern Canada.

Scientists are hoping to learn more about narwhals through a new effort to track them as they move around the icy waters of northern Canada, as well as more about how declining amounts of sea ice are affecting the creatures.

"Although we've been working on a better understanding of the narwhal in the past seven or eight years, it was only recently that people have figured out how to fit satellite radios to them, so we know where they go and what they're eating,” said Pete Ewins, an Arctic species specialist for the environmental group WWF-Canada.

Narwhal transmitters

A new project tagged nine narwhals in Tremblay Sound off the coast of the northern province of Nunavut back in August. The scientists restrained the whales, which can weigh up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kilograms), and fitted them with a satellite radio that has a transmitter mounted with Teflon rods to the blubber near the whale's dorsal area.

"The whole system is no bigger than a Blackberry cellphone, with a little transmitter the length of a pencil that sticks up," Ewins told OurAmazingPlanet.

When a narwhal comes to surface, the radio unit contacts with the air and activates the signal transmission. The animal's location is then sent via satellite to the researchers.

Of those nine whales fitted with the device, seven still have trackers that are transmitting information. For the others, the system likely malfunctioned or fell off. Eventually all of the trackers will be slowly expelled by the animals’ immune system.

While seven whales isn't a huge sample size, Ewins said that a lot of information can be gained by watching where the whales go. "Their position tells you depth of water over which they're spending the dark days of winter," he said.

Preserving Arctic waters

In addition to the basic coordinates, digital sensors also record the depth and the duration of each whale's dive. From that information, scientists can infer what the whales are eating during different times of the year, and how the thickness of sea ice in different parts of the Arctic impacts their behavior. The information can also be used to make a case for keeping these northern waters free from oil and gas exploration. Since narwhals are both protected and acoustically sensitive, knowing their locations could help the government make better decisions to preserve marine environments.

"The local native Inuit, who are our partners, are concerned about the changes in the sea ice but also the prospect of noisy ships and explosions to test for oil and gas," Ewins said.

Dog walker's shock as he finds 5ft blue shark on south coast beach

A dog walker was shocked to discover a five-foot killer shark washed up on a Sussex beach.

The rare Blue Shark had a giant bite mark in its side, meaning it could have been killed by an even bigger predator in the English Channel.

Walker Nikki Lambert showed her find on Camber Sands, East Sussex, to marine biologists who said it could have been attacked by a Great White.

She said: 'I could not quite believe it at first until I got a little closer.

'I have encountered driftwood washed up but not a shark.

'I was told that the only animals who would attack a Blue Shark like this would be a Great White Shark or a Killer Whale.'

Blue Sharks, which can grow up to 12ft long, are not considered to be aggressive but they have attacked and killed humans in other parts of the world.

This shark was discovered on double yellow lines in Aberystwyth in Wales last week after bring washed up following stormy weather

An estimated 20 million Blue Sharks are killed by fishermen every year.

Doug Herdson, of the Marine Fish Information Services, said: 'A blue shark of this size is a juvenile which should be on its way to south-west Spain or north-west Africa at this time of year.'

In Aberystwyth, Wales, last week bank worker Tom Huxley came out of a friend's house and was hit by they smell of rotting fish, but when he went to investigate he found the body of a 4ft blue shark lying inches from the road markings.

Mr Huxley, a former Aberystwyth University student, took a photo the fish outside the Gwesty Cymru hotel on 24 October.

It is not known how the shark came to end up on the road, but experts at Swansea University's Department of Bioscience believe it was washed up in recent stormy weather.

A six-foot specimen was washed up in Lewis, in the Hebrides, in September.

Solving The Megalithic Monument Mystery In The Land Of Giants

Archaeologists may be coming closer to resolving the mystery behind the puzzling megalithic concentric ring and tomb complex often called the "Stonehenge of the Levant".

It stands upon a land dotted with ancient dolmens or tombs that recall a distant time before the great urban centers of civilization arose in Mesopotamia and Egypt. According to legend, it was a land of ancient giants. Like stonehenge, its stone construction is concentric. At its center, however, is a tumulus of stone 65 feet in diameter and 15 feet tall. Long a mystery, scientists and scholars have puzzled and theorized about the meaning and identity of the site. Today, however, some investigations by archaeologists may be coming closer to the truth behind the enigmatic stone structure.

The site, known as Rujm el-Hiri ("the stone heap of the wild cate"), or more recently, Gilgal Refa'im (Hebrew for "Wheel of Giants", referring to a biblical race of giants), was first discovered just northeast of the Sea of Galilee in the Golan Heights area of Israel for serious study during an archaeological survey conducted in 1967-1968 after the Six-Day War. Following the survey, full-scale archaeological excavations were carried out from 1989 to 1992 by Moshe Kochavi and Yonathan Mizrachi through the Land of Geshur Project of Tel Aviv University's Institute of Archaeology.

They found that the site consists of a 520-foot diameter circle of basalt stones, encompassing four smaller, concentric circles of stacked stone walls that become progressively narrower in width. The walls of the circles are connected perpendicularly by variously placed smaller stone walls. Altogether, the site boasts as much as 37,500 metric tons of partially worked stone, with the walls standing up to 6.6 feet in height, with the outer wall as high as 8 feet. In the center of this concentric structure lies the central tumulus or cairn (interpreted as a tomb) built of smaller stones. At the core of the tumulus is a buried dolmen, or burial monument, consisting of two 5-foot-tall standing stones that support a large horizontal stone. The dolmen overlies a chamber, connected to a 10-foot-long access corridor. No human remains were found within the tomb.

The site, and other ancient settlements nearby, have traditionally been dated by archaeologists to the Early Bronze Age II (3000–2700 BCE) time period. But a reassessment was made when the site was excavated by Yosef Garfinkel and Michael Freikman of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2007. Freikman also returned in the summer of 2010 to further investigate the site’s date and function. He now suggests that the tomb in the center, thought to have been built in the Late Bronze Age (1550–1200 B.C.) was built at the same time as the rings, which have formerly been dated to the Early Bronze based on artifact finds. Tomb robbers looted the remains within the tomb, which included jewelry and weapons, but based on the discovery of a Chalcolithic pin dropped possibly by the robbers in a passageway, Freikman theorizes that the structure should be dated to an original construction during the Chalcolithic, and that the tumulus acts as the centerpiece of the ring construction. Moreover, an earlier phase of construction has been found beneath two later phases that contained the Bronze Age finds. Other Chalcolithic sites have been discovered in the vicinity of Rujm el-Hiri, including a very similar smaller stone structure dated to the Chalcolithic period.

What is it, really?

So what does this unusual ancient monumental construction mean? Who originally built it, and why?

A variety of proposed explanations have emerged. A large following suggests that it was a place of worship, where ceremonies were held during the longest and shortest days of the year. Others maintain that it was simply a monumental burial site for a major chieftain or important leader. Still others advance suggestions that it was a place to conduct astronomical observations for calculations related to religious purposes or an ancient calendar for agricultural purposes. All of the hypotheses have been based on interpretations of the material remains discovered and studied at the site.

One new theory, however, stands out from the rest, and takes into account not only the archaeological evidence at the site, but also the cultural contexts of ancient Chalcolithic practices and the surrounding Chalcolithic archaeological sites.

In an article published in the November/December, 2011 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, Dr. Rami Arav, long-time co-director of the Bethsaida excavations northeast of the coast of the Sea of Galilee and Professor of Religion and Philosophy at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, has proposed that the site was built for both funerary purposes and as a means for "excarnation", the removal of flesh from the bones of the deceased for placement in ossuaries, or bone boxes, by the ancient Chalcolithic inhabitants of the area. He begins his argument with a description of these small clay ossuaries discovered in the hundreds at various archaeological sites dated to Chalcolithic times. Unlike the mortuary practices of the Jews in the Jerusalem area during the First Century B.C and First Century A.D., when the deceased were allowed to decay away to their bones for a year in rock-carved cavities in burial caves before deposition of the disarticulated bones into ossuaries, there is no evidence indicating how the earlier Chalcolithic peoples of the Rujm el-Hiri area reduced the bodies of the deceased to bones for placement in their ossuaries. He suggests, based on the anthropological record of excarnation or "sky burial" practices of various cultures and civilizations, as well as his interpretation of archaeological finds at various sites, that the flesh of the bodies of their deceased were permitted to be consumed by birds of prey, specifically vultures, which can divest a body of its flesh within hours. He points, for example, to the ancient Zoroastrian dokhmas, or "towers of silence", whereby vultures would eat away the flesh from the bones of the dead placed on raised platforms, at least partly as a means of protecting the soil environment from pollution by decaying bodies. He suggests that the concentric walls of Rujm el-Hiri, which were built at progressively lower heights toward the central tumulus, allowed for vultures to easily view the laid-out bodies from their perches atop the walls. After the vultures did their work, the bones could then be freed of their flesh and disarticulated and placed in ossuaries, many of which were designed like houses or miniature granaries or silos. Scholars theorize that the ossuaries symbolized storage places for new life, just as granaries contained seeds or grain later sewn for new crop production. The practice is interpreted by some to suggest that the ancient Chalcolithic people, at least in this area of the ancient Near East, believed in a resurrection. The ossuaries were seen as "magic boxes" that had the power to resurrect the dead.

Arav further supports his argument with a reference to research that suggests that the Chalcolithic people of the Levant originally migrated from the ancient Anatolian region of present-day southern Turkey. Studies of the material culture show remarkable similarities between that of the Chalcolithic Levant and that of southern Turkey, and excarnation is thought to have been practiced in southern Turkey during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. As one example, a "vulture shrine" was discovered at the famous Neolithic site of Catalhoyuk in southeastern Turkey. The shrine featured a mural wall painting of vultures swooping over headless corpses, interpreted as a possible excarnation scene.

What next?

As all theories go, Arav's suggestion is just that - a theory. It will no doubt be the subject of some scholarly debate and criticism. But that is the nature of the game. Additional investigation and postulation about the mysterious "Wheel of Giants" are sure to come. Fo now, Arav's suggestion offers an intriguing and not altogether implausible explanation behind the enigma.

One of our news crews spotted some mysterious lights in the sky during Tuesday's 11 p.m. news, and now we're trying to figure out what it was.

A series of glowing reddish lights, almost like floating flames, dominated the sky Tuesday night in University Heights looking east. The unidentified objects soared into the darkness, eventually appearing to burn themselves out, adding to the intrigue. Police say they had no reports of any unusual sky activity, nor did renowned local astronomer Dennis Mammana.

"Something like this would have definitely crossed my radar screen," he said.

Tuesday night's sighting comes at a time of other popular sky shows, from the Northern Lights to last month's meteor show.

"A few weeks ago you had that great fireball crossing the sky. People saw it all the way from Las Vegas to San Diego," Mammana said.

So what were the mysterious balls of fire?

"The fact they were ascending sounds like they were being fired from some place on the ground," Mammana said.

One theory is floating Chinese sky lanterns -- essentially mini-hot air balloons -- that are carried into the air by rising heat from candles, or flares burning inside them. Mammana says in the past he has witnessed similar fireworks in the sky.

"Sparklers, flares... I don't know if it was these Chinese fireworks, but it can be quite befuddling if you walk away without watching them," he said.

Whether or not what we saw last night was actually Chinese sky lanterns is not clear. What is certain though is fire officials say launching these devices clearly presents a fire hazard, and whoever is responsible for setting them off could be held responsible for any damage they may cause.

A similar phenomenon of glowing red lights floating in the sky was reported in El Cajon back on New Year's Eve 2009. While never officially determined, fire officials at that time said they were most likely sky lanterns as well.

Michael Snyder writes: Today there is a horrific derivatives bubble that threatens to destroy not only the U.S. economy but the entire world financial system as well, but unfortunately the vast majority of people do not understand it. When you say the word "derivatives" to most Americans, they have no idea what you are talking about. In fact, even most members of the U.S. Congress don't really seem to understand them. But you don't have to get into all the technicalities to understand the bigger picture.

Basically, derivatives are financial instruments whose value depends upon or is derived from the price of something else. A derivative has no underlying value of its own. It is essentially a side bet. Originally, derivatives were mostly used to hedge risk and to offset the possibility of taking losses. But today it has gone way, way beyond that. Today the world financial system has become a gigantic casino where insanely large bets are made on anything and everything that you can possibly imagine.

The derivatives market is almost entirely unregulated and in recent years it has ballooned to such enormous proportions that it is almost hard to believe. Today, the worldwide derivatives market is approximately 20 times the size of the entire global economy.

Because derivatives are so unregulated, nobody knows for certain exactly what the total value of all the derivatives worldwide is, but low estimates put it around 600 trillion dollars and high estimates put it at around 1.5 quadrillion dollars.

Do you know how large one quadrillion is?

Counting at one dollar per second, it would take 32 million years to count to one quadrillion.

If you want to attempt it, you might want to get started right now.

To put that in perspective, the gross domestic product of the United States is only about 14 trillion dollars.

In fact, the total market cap of all major global stock markets is only about 30 trillion dollars.

So when you are talking about 1.5 quadrillion dollars, you are talking about an amount of money that is almost inconceivable.

So what is going to happen when this insanely large derivatives bubble pops?

Well, the truth is that the danger that we face from derivatives is so great that Warren Buffet has called them "financial weapons of mass destruction".

Unfortunately, he is not exaggerating.

It would be hard to understate the financial devastation that we could potentially be facing.

A number of years back, French President Jacques Chirac referred to derivatives as "financial AIDS".

The reality is that when this bubble pops there won't be enough money in the entire world to fix it.

But ignorance is bliss, and most people simply do not understand these complex financial instruments enough to be worried about them.

Unfortunately, just because most of us do not understand the danger does not mean that the danger has been eliminated.

In a recent column, Dr. Jerome Corsi of WorldNetDaily noted that even many institutional investors have gotten sucked into investing in derivatives without even understanding the incredible risk they were facing....

A key problem with derivatives is that in the attempt to reduce costs or prevent losses, institutional investors typically accepted complex risks that carried little-understood liabilities widely disproportionate to any potential savings the derivatives contract may have initially obtained.

The hedge-fund and derivatives markets are so highly complex and technical that even many top economists and investment-banking professionals don't fully understand them.

Moreover, both the hedge-fund and the derivatives markets are almost totally unregulated, either by the U.S. government or by any other government worldwide.

Most Americans don't realize it, but derivatives played a major role in the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008.

Do you remember how AIG was constantly in the news for a while there?

Well, they weren't in financial trouble because they had written a bunch of bad insurance policies.

What had happened is that a subsidiary of AIG had lost more than $18 billion on Credit Default Swaps (derivatives) it had written, and additional losses from derivatives were on the way which could have caused the complete collapse of the insurance giant.

So the U.S. government stepped in and bailed them out - all at U.S. taxpayer expense of course.

But the AIG incident was actually quite small compared to what could be coming. The derivatives market has become so monolithic that even a relatively minor imbalance in the global economy could set off a chain reaction that would have devastating consequences.

In his recent article on derivatives, Webster Tarpley described the central role that derivatives now play in our financial system....

Far from being some arcane or marginal activity, financial derivatives have come to represent the principal business of the financier oligarchy in Wall Street, the City of London, Frankfurt, and other money centers. A concerted effort has been made by politicians and the news media to hide and camouflage the central role played by derivative speculation in the economic disasters of recent years. Journalists and public relations types have done everything possible to avoid even mentioning derivatives, coining phrases like “toxic assets,” “exotic instruments,” and – most notably – “troubled assets,” as in Troubled Assets Relief Program or TARP, aka the monstrous $800 billion bailout of Wall Street speculators which was enacted in October 2008 with the support of Bush, Henry Paulson, John McCain, Sarah Palin, and the Obama Democrats.

But wasn't the financial reform law that Congress just passed supposed to fix all this?

Well, the truth is that you simply cannot "fix" a 1.5 quadrillion dollar problem, but yes, the financial reform law was supposed to put some new restrictions on derivatives.

And initially, there were some somewhat significant reforms contained in the bill. But after the vast horde of Wall Street lobbyists in Washington got done doing their thing, the derivatives reforms were almost completely and totally neutered.

So the rampant casino gambling continues and everybody on Wall Street is happy.

For now.

One day some event will happen which will cause a sudden shift in world financial markets and trillions of dollars of losses in derivatives will create a tsunami that will bring the entire house of cards down.

All of the money in the world will not be enough to bail out the financial system when that day arrives.

The truth is that we should have never allowed world financial markets to become a giant casino.

But we did.

Soon enough we will all pay the price, and when that disastrous day comes, most Americans will still not understand what is happening.

This past week it was reported that the hacktivist collective known as Anonymous claimed credit for taking offline over 40 websites used for sharing pedophilia – and for exposing the names and identifying information of more than 1500 alleged pedophiles that had been using the sites. News of the Anonymous campaign to actively target anyone hosting child porn sites comes from statements associated with Anonymous on Pastebin and two Anonymous YouTube video channels.

It’s within Anon’s character to go after targets that provoke the collective’s ire. Yet in this instance the group is highlighting a moral sense of outrage and horror most people will relate to – the evil crime of child sexual abuse – while revealing an internet underworld that many will be terrified to learn about for the first time.

According to Anonymous’ published timeline of events from the past few days, Anon’s campaign began on October 14 when some of its members were browsing a darknet site called Hidden Wiki.

Hidden Wiki is an index containing hundreds of underground websites that can’t be seen by search engines or viewed by regular internet users. Such sites can’t be reached by conventional means, and contain a variety of content ranging from innocuous to illegal.

An Anonymous Pastebin statement explains that their new campaign manifested upon finding a Hidden Wiki listing called “Hard Candy” that they say “was dedicated to links to child pornography.”

Anonymous claims that most of the pedophile-content sites listed on the Hidden Wiki, “shared a digital fingerprint with the shared hosting server at Freedom Hosting.”

The AnonMessage and BecomeAnonymous YouTube channels both posted videos with statements of intent to hunt, skin and kill pedobears everywhere, starting with Freedom Hosting.

Our understanding of the larger world depends greatly on the media. These days those media sources are numerous and growing. A recently released Pew Research Center study shows that Americans are now blending their news sources among many outlets, including television, online newspapers, web sites, and blogs.

I have advocated that television would be an excellent tool for visiting extraterrestrials in a dramatic Direct First Contact event. I know that sounds a bit “out there” but consider the advantages: Television has global reach, specializes in breaking news and live coverage and has a sharing network among news outlets unrivaled in the world. Clearly though, the type of coverage a Direct First Contact event received would change in the days and weeks following the initial event. Depending on how the event was to occur, coverage would begin to migrate from live to enterprise journalism. This is a natural cycle in the news business. When wildfires break out in a community, live coverage dominates at first. As the situation is eventually managed, the reporters begin to do enterprise stories focusing on the people impacted and critical pieces, such as determining the cause, the firefighting response and whether the proper precautions were taken to help prevent such fires.

One could expect that Direct First Contact coverage would move in the same way. The question is how those follow-up enterprise stories would be handled. The big difference between wildfires and extraterrestrials visiting Earth, aside from the scope of the story, is that wildfires are something we understand fairly well. First Contact would create all sorts of uncertainty. The media would need to look for experts and that’s probably a list they don’t have prepared. Hopefully, they would look in the right places and interview the folks from the SETI Institute, the International Astronomical Union or the other astrophysicists who have actively considered First Contact issues. Secondarily, there would be futurists and science fiction writers who have explored First Contact scenarios. Unfortunately though, there is a whole other group of writers who fall into what one might call the UFO community. I know it’s unfair to lump people together, but I think it’s safe to say that in any First Contact situation the UFO community will be extremely vocal. Because of the high degree of uncertainty in First Contact they may suddenly seem more credible to the mainstream media. If aliens do come to Earth to say hello or if we discover an engineered signal far off in space, doesn’t that lend some credibility to alien abduction theorists or those who believe we have been visited by aliens in the past? In all fairness, I think you would have to consider those questions in some fashion- the best way would of course be to ask the aliens themselves. Still, the effect that uncertainty has is to create a vacuum of information and usually people try to fill that vacuum with any information they can find. The UFO conspiracies would receive much more attention from the general public and the news media. The difference is the media, in the many forms it takes these days, has the ability to influence public perception. If they are chasing after every alien conspiracy theory that could have a dramatic impact on how people view extraterrestrials. It could lead to fear and knee-jerk reactions based on fear. I have said it before: I think there will be a vocal minority of isolationists that will be active in any First Contact situation. They will advocate for isolationism and suggest that we tell the aliens to leave us alone. How much steam this movement picks up will depend greatly on the media coverage. If the mainstream media gives such views quite a bit of attention, the number of people advocating isolationism will increase. If the media manages to realize the danger in chasing after every conspiracy theory, calmer heads might prevail.

In the end it comes down to two primary points: critical thinking and credibility. We will need to utilize critical thinking in the wake of First Contact. This includes the news media. Plenty of tough questions will need to be asked. Any information provided to us by extraterrestrials would need to be carefully weighed. However, credibility will be essential. The media will need to realize that crack-pots before First Contact could still very well be crack-pots After First Contact. Just because their subject matter turned out to have some basis in truth (aliens do exist) doesn’t mean that everything else they advocate is true (aliens kidnapped my cousin Earl and he was forced to mate with them).

Is the collective global media up to the task of critical thinking? Well, perhaps some outlets. Others, one would imagine, will go crazy with fear-mongering, headline-grabbing stories just to get attention. It will be up to news consuming public to decide who they will trust. The sensible majority will need to stand up and be counted.

Federal authorities to shut off all TV and radio communications simultaneously 11/9/11 at 2PM ET

If you have ever wondered about the government’s ability to control the civilian airwaves, you will have your answer on November 9th.

On that day, federal authorities are going to shut off all television and radio communications simultaneously at 2:00PM EST to complete the first ever test of the national Emergency Alert System (EAS).

This isn’t a wild conspiracy theory. The upcoming test is posted on the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau website.

Only the President has the authority to activate EAS at the national level, and he has delegated that authority to the Director of FEMA. The test will be conducted jointly by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through FEMA, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS).

In essence, the authority to seize control of all television and civilian communication has been asserted by the executive branch and handed to a government agency.

Military veteran: 'What I saw tonight was not anything I have ever seen before'

An Arizona witness with a strong military background was unable to identify a "dark, boomerang object with about 15 to 20 white lights in front" and the "size of a standard size house" as it passed silently overhead under 1,500 feet at 8:37 p.m. on October 19, 2011, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside on a back patio facing west.

"I am 46 years old and have served in the Navy back in the 80's ad 90's as an F-14 mechanic," the witness stated. "I have been exposed to just about every type of military aircraft and their general capabilities. I am also a Cessna private pilot. With that being said, what I observed tonight while sitting on my back patio went against every type of known aircraft I have been exposed to including any on TV."

The movement in the sky at first appeared to be a flock of birds "glowing pure white."

"I then realized what I was observing was some sort of aircraft that was in the shape of a boomerang that had on the front leading edges of the aircraft approximately 15-20 white lights from wing tip to wing tip including the center. At that time it was now directly in front of me traveling in a due south course following Highway 347 almost to the center of my town. I live in a small town. I estimate based on my military and private pilot experience it was traveling around 500 knots. It passed to my left and I was not able to observe any red or green anti-collision lights or the required white tail light."

The witness noticed that the object did not give off any emission.

"In my experience I knew a military type aircraft flying at this speed would have some telltale sign of emission from the tailpipes and none was observed. I was approximately 1/4 to no more then 1/2 mile from this object that appeared to be the size of a standard size house I estimate its altitude to have been around 1,000-1,500 feet. It made zero sound. When it was in my center field of vision, I could see clearly it was a boomerang-shaped aircraft that had a very dark skin color that caused it to contrast with the night sky and allow its shape to be easily seen as it flew by."

The object then made an abrupt course change.

"This aircraft traveled for another 4-5 seconds and then made a very abrupt course change to a westerly course from its southern course. This course change caused me at that time to lose any sight of the aircraft. It appeared to follow the Union Pacific Railroad line going west."

The witness called two area military bases and the local police department. Neither bases were flying in the area where the witness lives and the police had no other witness yet on record describing the same object.

"What I saw tonight was not anything I have ever seen before and the flight capabilities were not of anything I have seen in my F-14 experience or in other military jet aircraft I have been exposed to. Its ability to make such an abrupt course change defies Newton Law of an object in motion stays in motion. We currently don't have any known advance technology to affect that sort of abrupt course change. If this was in fact a secret military test aircraft, then I would say we have advanced significantly in our technology and have somehow been able to develop structural technology that is able to resist high G-force levels both positive and negative.

"What disproves this theory to me is it takes a lot of energy to make such a turn and it requires extremely strong flight controls to force such an abrupt course change and that would have caused the aircraft to emit some level of noise and this aircraft was extremely quite. It would have caused a significant amount of stress on the airframe and on the flight crew."

No town name was mentioned in the public portion of the MUFON report, which was filed on October 20, 2011. The events occurred on October 19, 2011. No images or videos were included with the report. The above quotes were edited for clarity.

Arizona is a current UFO ALERT 3 rating, with a high number of UFO sightings nationally. Arizona had 39 reports in September 2011 - the 4th highest reporting state - while California had 86 UFO reports - the highest reporting state in the nation.

First off let me say I am 46 years old and have served in the Navy back in the 80's ad 90's as an F-14 mechanic. I immediately called Luke Airforce base 556th Fighter Squadron and inquired as to whether they were currently conducting any night time operations in this area or the Barry Goldwater range about 40 miles southwest of me and the duty officer stated no, they were not currently conducting any operations in our area. Note: we sometimes see Lukes F-16 fly over us on there way to the range but it is always in the day time and not at night. I gave the duty officer a brief of what I observed and he entered it into his duty log.

I then called my local police dispatch and inquired if anybody including any of the on duty patrol officers had reported any unidentified aircraft flying over town at a low altitude in the last 15 minutes and she respinded that they have not received any other reports at that time. I gave her a quick brief of my observation.

Closing comments: I have never seen an unidentified flying object before and this is the first time I have ever made a report on one to anybody. I was not drinking and I am of sound mind. I have usually laughed about other people alleged sightings including one my brother and mother reported to me awhile back. What I saw tonight was not anything I have ever seen before and the flight capabilities were not of anything I have seen in my F-14 experience or in other military jet aircraft I have been exposed to. Scientists find coldest-ever star - with surface 'like a summer day on Earth'

The temperature of the surface is like a hot summer's day in Arizona or Seville - and would be quite pleasant for humans. It's the coldest object ever photographed outside our solar system.

But WD 0806-661 B is not a planet - it's a very small star. Its mass is just six to nine times the gas giant Jupiter.

Penn State Associate Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics Kevin Luhman, who discovered the object said, 'It is a very small star with an atmospheric temperature about as cool as the Earth's.'

The astronomers used Nasa's Spitzer space telescope - the most sensitive space telescope on Earth - to find the cold star, scanning 600 near-earth stars for objects orbiting them. Infrared telescopes are used because cold objects 'shine out' brightly in the images. The record-breaking star is 63 million light years from Earth and orbits a dense, collapsed 'white dwarf' star.

The star is a brown dwarf - and formed, like other stars, out of a cloud of dust and gas.

But because it failed to accumulate enough mass from the dust cloud, the thermonuclear reaction that 'lights up' normal stars fail to ignite.

The new brown dwarf's surface is between 27 and 80 degrees centigrade - so in places, it's a temperature humans might enjoy.

Ever since brown dwarfs first were discovered in 1995, astronomers have been trying to find new record holders for the coldest brown dwarfs - the objects are seen as valuable laboratories to help us understand the atmospheres of extrasolar planets with Earth-like temperatures.

Astronomers have named the brown dwarf ‘WD 0806-661 B’. It orbits the ‘white dwarf’ core of a star . The white dwarf would have shone like our sun until its outer layers were expelled into space in the final stages of a star's life.

‘The distance of this white dwarf from the Sun is 63 light-years, which is very near our solar system compared with most stars in our galaxy,’ Luhman said.

The orbit of the brown dwarf is huge, about 2,500 times the distance between Earth and the sun.

Luhman and his colleagues presented this new candidate for the coldest known brown dwarf in a paper published in spring 2011, and they now have confirmed its record-setting cool temperature in a new paper that will be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The real-life Blob: Is mysterious translucent jelly found in Cumbrian Fells from outer space?

The Lake District fells have been invaded by 'The Blob', a translucent jelly which is said in folklore to be from outer space.

Within the past week the mysterious translucent jelly has materialised in and around the fells of Patterdale, Cumbria.

While some put the mysterious goo down to meteor showers, others say the strange substance appears during rutting season.

A similar incident inspired the film 'The Blob' when in 1950 four policemen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, came across a huge disk of quivering jelly which measured six feet in diameter.

But unlike the hit 1958 horror film starring Steve McQueen these blobs don't terrorise the community and there have been no reports of any other supernatural behaviour.

The substance is known as 'Star Jelly' and some say is left over from meteor showers but its sporadic appearance around the world has continually dumb-founded scientists.

The last reported sighting came in 2009 when it was discovered in the hills of Scotland.

It had been suggested that the blob, which can be tracked back to the 14th Century, could be the remains of frogs, toads or worms, though tests have been inconclusive.

Rob Shephard, a holiday-cottage owner, of Patterdale, was one of the first to encounter the slime which has invaded the area.

Mr Shephard, 43, said: 'I first found out about the jelly from some friends on Monday and the next day I went out into the fells looking for it as I was intrigued.

'They said they had looked it up and it could be 'star jelly' - caused by a meteor shower.

'I know of at least five other people who have come across it in the past week,but as far as I know it has never been seen in these parts before.

'Within twenty minutes of the walk I came across the jelly myself. There were about nine or ten blobs of it floating on top of some puddles. They were the size of my foot.

'I didn't touch the jelly as it was pretty horrible weather up in the fells so I just took some snaps and made my way down.

'But I will definitely be going up again, and might try and put some in a container, although from everything I have read this stuff evaporates pretty quickly.

'I am not sure why this jelly has materialised but at first I thought it could have something to do with the rutting season.

'There are lots of stags in Scotland where the jelly has occurred before. But I would like to think meteor showers are involved.'

Tom Driscoll, 53, the owner of Patterdale Village Store, has also been left baffled by the appearance of the mysterious gelatinous blobs.

He said: 'I was walking at the weekend with my partner when we came across six or eight piles of the stuff.

'My initial thought was that it could be frog spawn, but when I had a closer look I realised this was not the case.

THE THEORIES BEHIND THE BLOB

• Frogs: Some say toxic frogs that have been eaten by other animals and then spat out are behind the substance

• Stags: When rutting season occurs the white substance seems to be more present on the hillsides

• Algae: The Blue-green algae variety forms colonies made up of cells in a gelatinous sheath. When on the ground, it is ordinarily not seen; but after rainfall it swells up into a conspicuous jellylike mass

• Meteor shower: On August 11 1979 a Texan woman reported the discovery of several purple blobs of goo on her front yard following a Perseid meteor shower, giving weight to the Star Jelly theory

'I touched it and it had the consistency of frog spawn but some of the pieces were as big as a person's foot as I didn't think it was anything that a human or animal could make.

'I have lived here for six years, and I go walking in the fells three to four times a week, but never before have I seen such a thing.

'It has left me totally flummoxed.'

His partner, Gillian Beggs, 60, added: 'There was talk that the jelly could be related to the rutting season, which sees stags round up female deer for mating. But if this was the case we would have noticed it before.

Huge 'disc' of ice in space gives clue to origin of our oceans - and hints there may be other Earths

The Herschel Space Observatory has captured for the first time a huge 'disc' of icy vapour clustered round a young star as it develops into a solar system.

The water round the star stretches far out into the 'edge' of its system. The water is likely to form into icy comets, which would crash into young worlds, bringing oceans with them.

The find suggests that water-covered planets such as Earth may be common.

‘Our observations of this cold vapor indicate enough water exists in the disk to fill thousands of Earth oceans,’ said astronomer Michiel Hogerheijde of Leiden Observatory in The Netherlands. Hogerheijde is the lead author of a paper in the journal Science.
